GAELIC GAMES FBD LEAGUE: Leitrim 1-8 Roscommon 1-5:A SECOND-HALF penalty goal converted by leading scorer James Glancy set up Leitrim for their first victory of the year in this competitive and entertaining derby played in excellent conditions at Ballinamore.
In a low-scoring opening quarter, Roscommon squandered several scoring chances as Leitrim led after 15 minutes following two pointed frees from Gary Hickey and Glancy with Ger Heneghan replying for the Rossies with a point from play.
Leitrim took a grip on the game in the final 10 minutes scoring three further points without reply through Paddy McGowan, Robert Lowe and a free by Glancy.
Then in a dramatic finale to the half, a speculative shot by Heneghan three minutes into extra-time was deflected to the net by Leitrim’s Ciarán Egan to put the visitors back in the game and leave the interval score 0-5 to 1-1.
Two John Rogers pointed frees and one from Glancy left the game deadlocked 10 minutes into the resumption but a penalty goal by Glancy in the 45th minute following a foul on the excellent Ray Cox swung the game in Leitrim’s favour.
They exchanged further points but Leitrim finished the strongest and were deserved winners.
