HOCKEY:In a sense it is no surprise that last year's winners of the Irish Senior Cup, Glenanne, are now out of the competition and if they were to look back into the record books they might struggle to find the last time they went on a three-match losing streak.
Last weekend they lost twice in the Leinster league, and on Saturday, one goal from the penalty spot by Ian Hamilton decided the match and ended this year's cup run for the club.
That Glenanne's departure should be to last year's defeated finalists Annadale will have added further piquancy to the win.
Hamilton's goal in a tight match came in the 24th minute and although Glenanne, as they did last Sunday in their pivotal league match against Pembroke, had ample opportunity to level, they simply couldn't.
It leaves the Tallaght side now concentrating on earning a place in Europe next season through the league play-offs.
At Santry, Fingal almost pulled off the upset of the round, when they pushed Ulster royalty Lisnagarvey to a golden goal, having ended normal time at 4-4.
It took a fifth goal from Garvey international Tim Cockram to settle the issue and send the Hillsborough side home smiling but more than a little rattled.
Monkstown emerged comfortable 4-0 winners over Kilkeel, Ian Allen collecting two goals there, while Three Rock Rovers also advanced with a 4-1 win over Trinity, Mitch Darling collecting two for the home side.
Cork Harlequins, who are flying the Munster flag in the competition, emerged from a one-sided affair against PSBPP. David Hobbs, John Hobbs and Eddie Gash on two goals each along with one from David Lombard, gave the Farmers Cross side an 8-2 victory.
Pembroke also came through at the expense of Bray. The Wicklow side kept one of the competition favourites to a 6-1 score line, a much better effort than what went before in the Leinster league. There Pembroke's Ian Symmons collected a hat-trick.
Ian Steen was also on three goals for Cookstown, whose raid on Claremont Road yielded much as they had hoped. Steen's three was added to by an array of players in the Ulster team's 7-0 defeat of host YMCA.
