MEN'S HOCKEY: A 3-3 DRAW with Corinthians on Wednesday night keeps the Leinster Senior League open for the weekend as Glenanne continue to falter in their efforts to close out the domestic season.
A penalty stroke save from Corinthians’ Ross Murray minutes from the end of the match at Whitechurch Park means the Tallaght side have to take a point this weekend from either Monkstown on Saturday or Weston on Sunday to claim the league title.
Few doubt Glenanne will achieve their aim and certainly if Monkstown hold them pointless their match against no-win Weston on Sunday is almost certain to provide the points they need. Weston are closing an eventful season, have just one point and have conceded 62 goals from 17 matches, which is a slightly better defensive record than UCD just above them who have let in one goal more.
Glenanne are still on top of the table with 39 points with YMCA in second place on 36 points and Pembroke in third on 31 points. Monkstown currently hold the fourth IHL automatic qualifying spot but that could change at the weekend depending on the outcome of their two matches against Glenanne and UCD.
A slip-up by the Leinster Senior Cup winners and a win for Corinthians against YMCA on Sunday or a win for Railway Union against Pembroke could make the battle for the fourth IHL spot and the fifth wild card place very competitive indeed.
