While it remains possible for Corinthians to edge Glenanne out of second place in the Leinster league placings, it is more likely that Glenanne can repeat their Irish Senior Cup final win over YMCA next week to gain a decisive three-point cushion before tackling the champions Pembroke Wanderers in the last round of fixtures.

So, with Cookstown taking the third spot in Ulster, the pairings for the all-Ireland quarter-finals should be (first leg April 28th, second leg May 5th): Corinthians (L3) v Harlequins (M1); Cookstown (U3) v Pembroke (L1); Annadale (L2) v Glenanne (L2); Cork C of I (M2) v Lisnagarvey (U1).

As regards the absorbing relegation issue in Leinster, it will be less complicated if Aer Lingus and Avoca complete their programme with a draw on April 21st, leaving both sides safe by a one-point margin from Railway Union and Trinity, who each have finished with 15 points. But a defeat for Aer Lingus or Avoca would necessitate a three-way play-off to decide last and second-last places.

Last spot, of course, means direct relegation but the other team will have a good chance of survival against the second best team from Division Two, probably Portrane or possibly Naas. Portrane, though, are keeping up the chase on the promotion favourites, UCD, right to the wire.
