Glenanne's resurgence continued in the Leinster Senior League on Saturday, when they finished strongly to beat Monkstown 42 at Rathdown.

John Goulding scored in an opening Glenanne raid after Aaron McCarthy had saved from Mark Lambe. The visitors had an unstable period before the interval, when Ian Allen equalised from a penalty stroke and Brian Groves pushed Monkstown ahead following a short corner.

Glenanne, with David Shaw returning after injury to right-back, regained a grip on the game in the second half. Although Stephen Butler sent a penalty against a post, he soon made it 2-2 following an incision by Alan Browne. Then, Graham Shaw seized the lead from a corner and Goulding increased the margin in the dying stages.

YMCA, beating Aer Lingus 4-0, and Corinthians, winning 2-0 at Railway Union, also were stronger penetrative sides, while Three Rock Rovers, in drawing 1-1 with Avoca at Grange Road, would have taken full points but for the defiant smothering of their attacks by Stephen Kinsella.

In the first half, Alan Bothwell was on the target for Rovers but, once again, Graham Dowling got an equalising touch. A feature of the match was the stirring midfield duel between Ross Varian and Colm Brady.

Pembroke Wanderers added five more goals to their tally, including another hat-trick by Justin Sherriff, against Trinity at Serpentine Avenue but the Students startled the home side by recovering from 2-0 half time arrears to make it 2-2 before Pembroke recovered sufficiently to draw clear (5-2).

Gareth Hinds reduced the deficit after a flurry of saves by Nigel Henderson and then a thrust by Paul Tuttle yielded an opportunity for an inspired Christian Judd to score from an acute angle.

Although Trinity couldn't sustain the offensive, the performance leaves them in buoyant shape to defend the Mauritius Cup in Limerick this week. UCD, who beat Belfast Harlequins 4-0 in the opening round of the Irish Senior Cup, should also be sturdy contenders in the Universities Championship, but Queen's who lost 5-3 to the RUC in the senior competition, may not be significant challengers.

St James' Gate gained a notable away win in which a goal by Eugene Ronan eliminated South Antrim.
