Fitzgibbon Cup/GMIT - 3-11 Garda College - 1-13: Two goals in injury-time gave understrength Galway-Mayo IT a shock win over the Garda College in a fiery Fitzgibbon Cup match in Shannon yesterday.

Garda College finished with 14 men as Willie Hickey was red-carded in the 28th minute for a foul on Cian Burke and after the final whistle David Laing, who had been booked, was red-carded as the losing side berated the referee.

Garda College were incensed by several refereeing decisions as GMIT, without key men Shane Kavanagh and David Collins who are in South Africa with the Galway hurlers, rallied late.

Garda College, with Clare's Tony Carmody the man of the match, led by 0-11 to 0-6 at the break and seemed destined for victory when Laing booted home a 41st-minute goal to lead by 1-11 to 0-8.

And with intercounty players of the calibre of Galway full back Diarmaid Cloonan, Laois forward Darren Rooney and Cork's Jerry O'Connor, Garda College were expected to romp home.

Carmody shot the ninth of his 10 points a minute later to put them seven ahead before GMIT responded with a goal from Dylan Hayden.

Barry Hanley hit two points for GMIT either side of another Carmody effort to leave it 1-13 to 1-11.

Hanley soloed from 60 yards a minute and a half into stoppage time to blast home a superb goal to edge the Galway college a point in front, and a minute later substitute Trevor Kavanagh sealed a date with University of Limerick.
