GMIT ... 2-8 Sligo ... 1-10 GMIT claimed their second major scalp in the Connacht FBD League when they edged out Sligo at Moycullen yesterday. The Galway college could have won by a bigger margin but poor shooting almost cost them dearly.

GMIT got an early break when impressive wing back Alan Burke pounced on Sligo goalkeeper Peter Walsh's fumble to fire to the net to give them a 1-2 to 0-3 lead on the quarter. Sligo, who were short a number of regulars, introduced Seán Davey who made an immediate impact scoring two points.

Sligo subsequently gained a slender lead but GMIT hit back for a crucial goal scored by Cormac Bane just before the interval to give them a half-time of 2-3 to 0-7.

GMIT dominated the early exchanges on the restart but once again poor shooting led them down. Alan O'Donovan's pointed free was scant reward for the amount of possession they had enjoyed. Almost immediately GMIT goalkeeper Neil Walsh saved brilliantly from a blistering Davey.

Within minutes the same player fired over another point but significantly Sligo failed to bridge the gap and with Dermot Earley lording matters at midfield GMIT held on for a slender victory.
