GO THUNDER, involved in a blanket finish at Roscommon eight days ago, fairly routed the opposition to win yesterday's featured European Breeders Fund Premier Nursery, sailing home under bottom weight in the hands of Joanna Morgan to beat the Frances Crowley-partnered Peace Melody by nine lengths.
However, the testing ground made all the difference to the Willie Mullins-trained Nordico gelding who was rather unluckily short-headed by Maskul at Roscommon and yesterday beat his rival into a remote fifth place. "He was always travelling well within himself but not at Roscommon," said Morgan, who elected to go for her race on straightening for home.
Go Thunder is trained by Willie Mullins who is currently on vacation in Portugal and is owned by his mother-in-law, Mrs Marie Longton.
The transformation in going also accounted for a significant turn about in form in the Kelliher Group Handicap. Timourid, 3 1/2 lengths adrift of Easy Definition at Leopardstown, relegated the Dermot Weld-trained favourite to fifth place having made all the running. Trained by Ben Lawlor the winner was ridden by 8lb claiming apprentice George Coogan.
Machalini made all to win the Ballybeggan Racegoers Club Maiden, bravely holding the challenge of Joking Rebuff by three-parts of a length despite spreading a hind plate in running.
Tommy Stack's charges are now running well and the maiden Manetti handled the ground better than was anticipated to win the Barrett Bookmakers Q.R. Handicap Hurdle by nine lengths.
The Smirnoff Handicap provided a quite unexpected result when Asta Madera just got the better of Ben Bruff.
