Campbell primed
MULLINGAR SCRATCH CUP: Stackstown's Mark Campbell holds a two-shot lead after the first day of the 72-hole Mullingar Scratch Cup. Campbell will face a challenge from Rory McIlroy over the final 36 holes today.
After opening his title campaign with a course record 65, equalled in the second round by Westport's Cathal O'Malley, Campbell followed up with a four-under-par 68 in the afternoon to finish the day two strokes clear of McIlroy on 11-under-par 133.
He signed off in style too, erasing a double bogey at the 17th with an eagle three at the 18th, where he rifled a glorious three-iron to 12 feet.
After carding five birdies and an eagle three at the 16th in his morning 65, Campbell had an eagle, five birdies, one bogey and a double bogey after lunch.
McIlroy compiled rounds of 68 and 67 to get to nine under par.
Romero prevails
WENTWORTH SENIOR MASTERS: Eduardo Romero closed with a round of two-under-par 70 to capture his second successive Wentworth Senior Masters title over the Edinburgh Course at Wentworth Club, a victory which helped to erase the pain of the previous week's play-off defeat in The Senior British Open Championship.
The big-hitting Argentinian avoided any repeat of his narrow defeat to Loren Roberts at Turnberry by keeping his nose in front from the fourth hole onwards, securing the £37,500 winner's cheque with a 54-hole total of nine-under-par 207.
Sam Torrance carded a 71 to share second place with Horacio Carbonetti of Argentina (69) on seven-under-par 209.
Romero, said: "Over the past two weeks I have played some fantastic golf and to retain this title is an amazing feeling. It makes up for what happened last week but next time I will win The Senior British Open as well."
Des Smyth finished seven shots back after a final round of 73.
Wade on the charge
IRELAND RYDER CUP CHALLENGE: Australia's John Wade powered through the field at Killarney Golf Club with a final round of seven-under-par 63 to take his first Challenge Tour title.
Wade's clubhouse lead of 19- under-par 261 proved too good for the rest of field as the final group of Sebastian Fernandez of Argentina, Ireland's Michael McGeady and Juan Parron of Spain failed to catch him.
Wade picked up the first prize of €20,800 and secured a one-year exemption to the Tour.
50th win for Woods
BUICK OPEN: A fourth consecutive round of 66 gave Tiger Woods his 50th US Tour victory in the Buick Open in Michigan last night.
Woods, who carded six birdies and one bogey, finished on 24 under par, three shots ahead of Jim Furyk in second.
Furyk posted an eight-under par 64 on a final-day charge, but Woods, the youngest player to win 50 tournaments in the US, was never really threatened.
Leading final scores: 264 - Tiger Woods. 267- Jim Furyk. 268 - J Durrant. 269 - Sean O'Hair, Vaughan Taylor, Scott Verplank.
