Scotland’s Russell Knox fired a five-under 67 to be four shots off the lead at the halfway stage of the Fortinet Championship in California.
After a solid first round 69, the 36-year-old recovered from a bogey five at the first hole to card four birdies in the space of six holes on the front nine, and added two more on the 14th and 16th.
At eight-under par he was in a three-way tie for seventh behind pacesetter Maverick McNealy, who followed a 68 with a superb 64 to be 12-under for the tournament.
McNealy’s fellow American Beau Hossley also shot a 64 to take a share of second place at 10-under with Mito Pereira after the Chilean’s successive 67s.
Americans Troy Merritt (68), Will Zalatoris (67) and Bronson Burgoon (67) shared fourth place a shot further back.
England’s David Skinns was the only other Briton apart from Knox to survive the cut, his one-under 71 leaving him on the threshold score of three-under, while England’s Danny Willett (72), Aaron Rai (72) and Callum Tarren (74) failed to make it to the weekend.
