Michael Hoey leads the Thailand Classic after he carded a faultless eight under par round of 64, breaking the course record on the opening day at Black Mountain.

Ballymoney man Hoey made a blistering start, rattling in birdies at two, four, five and six to reach the turn at four under par.

The world number 227 picked up two more shots on the 11th and 13th and then came home in style with birdies on his final two holes.

Hoey currently sits a shot clear at the top of the leaderboard, a stroke ahead of Taiwan’s Chien-yao Hung and Italy’s Renato Paratore who are currently through 17 and 14 respectively.

The County Meath man has had a consistent round however bogeys on the third and 12th leave him well adrift of the leaders.
