Pádraig Harrington’s hopes of playing in next week’s US Open were extinguished in Memphis yesterday after a level-par 70 left him on five over par at the St Jude Classic.

After opening with a five-over 75 on Thursday, Harrington knew he required something in the mid 60s to make the cut at TPC Southwind but a birdie and bogey on each nine was not enough to get him into the weekend action.

Graeme McDowell will be in action at Chambers Bay next week but he was also on course to miss the cut after slipping out to eight over par after seven holes of his second round in Memphis.

The draw for next week's US Open sees world number one Rory McIlroy tee it up alongside defending champion Martin Kaymer and US Amateur champion Gunn Yang from South Korea.

Shane Lowry is also in action in Washington state and he will play his opening two rounds in the company of Scottish Ryder Cup player Stephen Gallacher and American Ben Martin.
