Colleges' Football: Good Counsel of New Ross were too powerful for Carlow Schools and coasted to a 1-13 to 0-6 win to qualify for the Leinster Colleges SFC A Final at Dr Cullen Park, Carlow, on Saturday.
Carlow midfielder Mark Corcoran kicked the opening point in the second minute but Good Counsel responded with four points by Mark Molloy, Shane Roche, Pádraig Whelan and Roche again. Roche caused the Carlow defence endless problems and finished with 0-8.
Good Counsel midfielder David Lyng landed the only goal on 12 minutes and the Wexford college led 1-8 to 0-5 at half-time.
Pádraig Amond pointed a superb free five minutes into the second half but that was his side's only score of the half.
St Patrick's, Cavan, claimed their place in the semi-finals, 3-13 to 1-5, after a powerful second-half display against Malahide CS at the St Sylvester's grounds on Saturday. Malahide trailed by just three points at the break but were punished for defensive lapses, Martin Dunne giving a polished display at corner forward.
Stephen Walshe scored a goal for the home side on 14 minutes but St Patrick's took over after that. With Enda Gaffney contributing four points to the Cavan cause, the visitors led by 0-9 to 1-3 at half-time.
The two teams traded a point apiece before Dunne kicked two quick scores. Dunne then grabbed a goal for St Pat's in the 48th minute and Joshua Hayes and Colin Smyth added goals in the last 10 minutes.
Malahide had a man sent off with a few minutes remaining.
