Colin Montgomerie will receive a culture shock, of the pleasant variety, when he competes in the Peugeot French Open at the National Club in Paris this week. The Scot suffered extreme verbal abuse from America's version of lager louts at the US Open last weekend, but can expect far more refined behaviour on his return to the European Tour - and, not surprisingly, he has been installed as 7 to 1 favourite to lift the crown.
He won't have it all his own way, though. A number of those who made the trip to San Francisco have returned, among them Retief Goosen - a 14 to 1 shot - who is seeking to retain the title he won in impressive fashion in the rain-hampered tournament last year, while the 1996 champion Robert Allenby is on offer at 12 to 1. Goosen has shown consistently good form this season and is good value for money at those odds to claim successive victories in the French Open. It could be the South African's week. For each-way value, a saver on Philip Walton, who is on the way back to his best, wouldn't go amiss at a price of 50 to 1.
