A bit more consistency is what's needed if Retief Goosen is going to challenge for a third US Open title in June, according to the South African, who is in Shanghai preparing for BMW Asian Open.

Goosen won the major in 2001 at Tulsa and 2004 at Shinnecock Hills but an eye problem has hampered his progress this season and forced him to pull out of defending his Commericalbank Qatar Masters title.

Nevertheless he has finished in the top 20 in four of the five tournaments he has entered and in the WGC-CA Championship last month he finished tied second before taking a share of 17th place at the Masters two weeks ago.

A victory in Shanghai would be the 39-year-old's first on on the European Tour in over a year.

"I had problems with my eye at the start of the year but I started playing well a few weeks before the Masters," says Goosen.  "Some of my game was starting to come together and I played well in Doral last month, so at the moment I feel my game is pretty good.

"I have played a lot of tournaments, which is important to improve your overall game. I played well in Korea last month where I finished third and hopefully this week I'll do well.

"My main goal is to improve my game and become more consistent again. My game is a bit up and down at the moment and I just need some more consistency overall.

"Obviously I want to get my game to peak at a major and with the US Open coming up, and I hope to be ready."
