GORDI trained by Dermot Weld was the best supported horse yesterday for Saturday's Pertemps St Leger at Doncaster. The Theatrical colt was backed down from 8 to 1 to 7 to 1.
Fourteen horses were declared at at yesterday's five day acceptance stage. They are: Chief Contender, Clerkenwell, Desert Boy, Dushyantor, Flying Legend, Gordi, Heron Island, Mons, Samraan, Shaatou, Sharaf Kabeer, St Mawes, Wilawander, Pricket.
As expected, Henry Cecil did not declare the Vodafone Oaks winner Lady Carla who has not run since her odds on defeat in the Irish Oaks at the Curragh in July.
But Cecil will still be double handed in his bid for a third Classic victory of the year. He has both Great Voltigeur Stakes winner Dushyantor, the mount of Pat Eddery, and Newmarket handicap scorer Flying Legend (Willie Ryan) in the race.
Dushyantor shares favouritism on 7, to 2 with Mons in William Hill's latest betting on the race, with Godolphin's March Stakes winner Sharaf Kabeer next at 11 to 2.
Willie Carson, who has hinted that this may be his last season, looks unlikely to gain a fourth St Leger victory on what may be his final ride in a British classic. The 53 year old Scot, successful previously on Dunfermline Sun Princess and Minster Son, has been booked for outsider Desert Boy.
