An injury-time pointed free from Eoin Gormley gave Tyrone an unlikely draw at Ballybofey in a compelling contest.
Having dominated the first half, Donegal led by 0-3 to no score by the 14th minute and by 0-6 to 0-4 by half-time, despite having kicked seven wides. After the interval they picked up their first-half tempo with points by Brendan Devenney and the excellent Brian Roper.
Tyrone struggled, unable to get any real creativity from the usually reliable Peter Canavan. Without his promptings, much was left to the energetic Eoin Gormley.
Donegal continued to dictate with points from Adrian Sweeney and James Gallagher. However, leading by five points with 52 minutes remaining they then lost their shape, and Tyrone changed theirs. Canavan and Gormley switched positions, Gormley creating havoc at half forward, Canavan doing much the same in his new inside role. This move turned the game.
Brian Dooher scored from 40 metres, and substitute Stephen Lawn and Gromley (2) hit points that revived Tyrone's challenge. Two minutes into added time, Canavan palmed a pass from a hopeful forward ball towards Stephen Lawn, who was fouled by a nervous Donegal defence.
Gormley tapped over the simple free to earn a draw. However, Tyrone goalkeeper Martin Conway, deflected a Damien Diver effort onto his own crossbar in the final seconds.
