Derek Gormley was the toast of Markievicz Park yesterday after his stoppage time goal gave Bunninadden their first Sligo senior football championship since 1891.

Coolera/Strandhill were leading by a point, 0-11 to 1-7, when Gormley fisted the ball to the net in a crowded goalmouth from captain Fergal O'Flaherty's 30-yard free.

Bunninadden failed to register a score between the 18th minute and the end of the half during which time their opponents added six points to lead 0-7 to 0-6 at half-time, but Gormley put Bunninadden 1-7 to 0-8 ahead with a goal in the 36th minute. Coolera/Strandhill battled back bravely with their top scorer, and Sligo county player, John McPartland levelling the scores from a free in the 49th minute.

The men from Knocknarea looked to have finally bridged the 107 years gap when Liam Healy pointed from play five minutes from time. But Bunninadden refused to throw in the towel and were richly rewarded when Gormley struck for his golden goal.
