Bertolini shrugged aside top-weight to give John Gosden his second Guineas trial in two days at Newmarket yesterday, and as if to emphasise his status as Midas the Stanley House man had earlier visited the winner's enclosure to unsaddle "the most unfit horse" in his yard.

Gosden's Valentine Waltz entered calculations for the 1,000 Guineas on Tuesday by taking the Shadwell Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes.

And Bertolini, partnered like Valentine Waltz by Frankie Dettori, won the Listed Victor Chandler European Free Handicap, a traditional prep for the 2,000 Guineas, despite being entered, according to his trainer, only as an "an afterthought" when the race was reopened last week.

Gosden, Sheikh Mohammed and Dettori began the afternoon by landing Division One of the Wood Ditton Stakes with Swan Knight, which had to have surgery on a knee problem last year and did not race as a result.

"He is certainly the most unfit horse I have got," said Gosden. "You saw how he tired up the hill."

Despite winning the Group Three Weatherbys Earl of Sefton Stakes with Shiva, Henry Cecil was disappointed.
