Steffi Graf today set up a tantalising Australian Open quarter-final against old foe Monica Seles. Graf stormed into the quarterfinals with a straight-sets win over unseeded Austrian Barbara Schett. The German 10th seed, who has captured the Australian title four times and won a total of 21 Grand Slam championships, beat Schett 6-1 6-1.
Sixth seed Seles wasted no time putting away Sandrine Testud 6-0 6-3. The four-time former champion clinched the first set in just 17 minutes, losing only five points as the 14th-seeded Frenchwoman's shots repeatedly sailed wide.
Seles looked a little less formidable in the second set as she slammed a few balls into the net or long while attempting to move Testud around the court.
But the 26-year-old Frenchwoman, who made it to the quarter-finals last year, never posed a serious threat.
The Yugoslavia-born American sealed the match with one of her signature winners down the line.
In the previous round Graf lost the first set to American Mary Joe Fernandez - a player she has beaten in all their previous 16 meetings. Graf was way off form, three times losing serve as Fernandez took it 6-4.
