Golden League: The Nigerian-born Portuguese Francis Obikwelu upset Olympic champion Maurice Greene on his 30th birthday with victory in the 100 metres at the Paris Golden League meeting last night.
Obikwelu clocked 10.06 seconds while the American clocked 10.14 in second place, his reaction time the slowest of the eight men who finished the race.
"I need three whole days before I run when I come to Europe and I only had two," he said. "I will be fine (for Athens)."
Greene said he did not know if he would run in the prestigious Zurich meeting in a fortnight's time but promised to run under 10 seconds at the London grand prix at Crystal Palace next Friday.
World 400 metres hurdles champion Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic, unbeaten for three years, remained in the hunt for a $1-million jackpot with an untroubled win in the opening track event of the meeting.
Tonique Williams-Darling of the Bahamas, another seeking a share of the jackpot, clocked the fastest time of the year for 400 metres, 49.15 seconds.
South African high jumper Hestrie Cloete, Swedish triple jumper Christian Olsson and Lithuanian discus thrower Virgilijus Alekna also stayed in the hunt for gold by winning their events.
