Roscommon captain Francie Grehan faces a three-month suspension after a stamping incident in Sunday's Connacht football first round in Hyde Park. It happened about 10 minutes into the second half of the match when Grehan's Galway counterpart Padhraic Joyce was lying injured on the ground after having been fouled. A brief fracas erupted and in a ruck of players jostling around Joyce, Grehan is clearly seen lifting his boot and bringing it down on the Galway full forward.
Grehan's actions were replayed and highlighted on The Sunday Game. The controversy generated was sufficient to trigger the GAA National Referees' Committee's quick response unit in the shape of NRC PRO Fr Seamus Gardiner. He confirmed that match referee Brendan Gorman of Armagh had not seen the incident when it happened, as he was unsighted - unlike RTÉ's main camera angle, which clearly showed what had occured.
Given that the referee's report will shed no further light on the matter, the Games Administration Committee of the GAA will almost certainly view the match video and ask Grehan to account for himself.
It is only a few weeks since comparable incidents in the Rathnew-Ballinderry All-Ireland club semi-final earned three-month suspensions for two of Wicklow's best players Tommy Gill and Trevor Doyle both of whom were seen to kick at Ballinderry players. Match referee Michael Collins had not taken any action and a couple of weeks elapsed before it was brought to the GAC's attention. On the weekend of last month's annual congress, an appeal by Rathnew to Central Council failed to overturn the suspensions.
GAC is not due to meet until tomorrow week but it is likely that Grehan hasn't heard the last of this matter.
