PAUL GRIFFIN of the Lee Strand team was the winner of the Tour of Midleton yesterday and this puts him back into contention for the Classic League competition.

At the end of nine laps of a six and a half mile circuit, Griffin won from Bill Moore with Shane Baker third and the 15 points brings Griffin's total to 41, only one point behind the joint leaders David McCann, who is in Atlanta for the Olympic road race, and Tommy Evans.

Griffin won the first of the eight races to count in the League at Carlow and now with just the events left on the next two Sundays at Lurgan and Listowel, he is poised to get back on top again.

After three wins in a row in the junior competition, Barry Twohig's run was halted when the new champion Paul O'Callaghan was first in the Junior Tour with John Mannix second and Twohig third.
