Gonzaga College ... 26 Presentation, Bray ... 3: Full back Shane Hanratty celebrated Pancake Tuesday with a brilliant hat-trick of tries, two of which he plonked down straight under the posts in the Leinster Schools' Junior Cup tie at Stradbrook yesterday.
Gonzaga ended up clear winners despite long periods of dominance by the Presentation forwards but the Bray side failed to turn their advantages into scores.
Gonzaga centre Thomas Toomey put in a telling blow right from the kick-off when he held onto a classic kick-out from outhalf Michael Boland and scored wide out after 30 seconds.
Presentation got their only score of the match after 20 minutes with a well-struck penalty by Steven Cranley.
However, Gonzaga struck back on the re-start with Hanratty's first try as he took advantage of another of Michael Boland's pinpoint kick-offs, to lead 12-0 at half-time.
Presentation put on the pressure in the second half but relieving kicks and aggressive attacking ploys by Boland gained a crucial advantage late in the game for Gonzaga.
These kicks gave Hanratty his further opportunities and he coasted in close to the posts for easy conversions by Boland.
Presentation hardly deserved to be beaten by so wide a margin, and their full team effort should bode well for the players over the next few years.
