GOLF/Honda Classic: Padraig Harrington won his first PGA Tour event when he beat Vijay Singh in a sudden death play-off at the second tie hole in Honda Classic at the Country Club at Mirasol, Florida yesterday.

Harrington got up and down with an amazing chip at the first tie hole where Ogilvie slipped out of contention with a bogey five after driving into a bunker.

At the second play-off hole both Harrington and Singh again missed the green. Harrington chipped to six feet and Singh to three but after Harrington rolled in his putt Singh saw his lip out.

Nine birdies in 10 holes from the fourth helped Harrington to a final round of 63 and a play-off with Singh and Ogilvie.

Starting the day tied for 21st place Harrington raced up the leaderboard after a birdie at the first.

Out in 30 Harrington conjured up four more birdies at the start of the back nine but saw his round begin to unravel with back-to-back bogeys on the 14th and 15th.

However another birdie at the 17th took him back in 33 for his 63 and a 14 under par total of 274.

Singh, who surrendered the world number one ranking to Tiger Woods at the Doral, underlined his determination to reclaim top spot by rocketing up the leaderboard with a final round of 64.

The Fijian went to the turn in 31 helped largely by an eagle three at the fifth and matched Harrington on the back nine with three birdies.

Ogilvie shot a flawless four under par final round of 68. The American had an opportunity to win on the 18th but his birdie putt from 15 feet slipped past the hole.

CHALLENGE TOUR: David Higgins missed the chance to follow in the footsteps of his father Liam by winning the Tusker Kenya Open at Karen near Nairobi.

Despite starting the final round a shot off the lead, Higgins Jnr closed with a disappointing 73 which left him in equal 10th place on level par 280.

That was eight strokes behind the runaway winner, Daniel Vancsik from Argentina, who romped to the title with a best-of-the-week 63 for 272.

He finished three strokes ahead of South African Michael Kirk and four clear of England's Sam Walker, who closed with a second successive 68.

It's 28 years since Liam Higgins won the Kenyan title at in Nairobi, and David was eager not only to bridge that gap but also to secure his first Challenge Tour win since 2000.

But it wasn't to be. Two bogeys in the opening three holes put him back on his heels and, with no birdies around, he steadily slipped down the field.

Two more bogeys followed at the 13th and 16th and while a birdie finally arrived at the last hole, it was too little, too late.

The other two surviving Irishmen finished down the field. Tim Rice carded a 71 for 288 while Justin Kehoe was a shot further back in tied 55th after a 75.

SENIORS TOUR: Eamonn Darcy finished a disappointing 15th in the the Tobago Plantations Seniors Classic yesterday.

After a first round of 66 Darcy slipped down the field with a pair of 74s - six shots behind Luis Carbonetti who had two shots to spare over his brother Horacio and Scotland's Bill Longmuir.

Denis O'Sullivan (70) and Eddie Polland (71) both finished on five over par 221.
