In marked contrast to his play on Thursday, when he had a Midas touch with his putter and required just 22 putts, the 40-year-old Dubliner was brought back down to earth with a bang as he combined some wayward driving off the tee with a number of loose putts to finish on eight under par.

In contrast, Americans Jason Dufner (-10) and William McGirt (-9) were finding their touch on the greens to relegate Harrington into third place going into the final two rounds. World number two Luke Donald, who can reclaim top spot from Rory McIlroy with a win this weekend, was part of a large group one shot further back.
