European Ryder Cup player Henrik Stenson did his best to overshadow world number one Tiger Woods in the Target World Challenge in California.
Woods is the host of the season-ending event at Thousand Oaks but his first-round 68 meant he had to settle for a share of second place with Geoff Ogilvy, with Stenson out in front.
The Swede carded a six-under-par 66 to put himself in early contention for the $1.35 million first prize put up by Woods.
Paul Casey, Fred Couples, John Daly and Colin Montgomerie all finished at three-under 69 and are tied for fourth.
Chris DiMarco and Jose Maria Olazabal are tied for eighth at two-under.
Defending champion Luke Donald struggled to a four-over 76 and is 15th in the 16-player field.
Ireland's Padraig Harrington was joint second favourite for the event before the start of play but has work to do after slumping to a three over par 75.
