News: Tyrone manager Mickey Harte is to retain a squad of 38 players for this year' s championship.
He has confirmed he will not be cutting his panel back to the conventional 30, so as he can generate increased levels of competition during training sessions.
Tyrone have been left with a six-week period of competitive inactivity as a result of their failure to qualify for the National League semi-finals, and Harte is continuing with his policy of not playing friendly games. "Once you cut a panel to 30 there isn't the same competition for places on a panel. The rationale behind it is everybody needs a bit of competition. It's a case of keeping everybody on their toes," said Harte.
He will only be permitted to name a panel of 30 for each championship game, meaning eight players will not be involved each time Tyrone play, starting with the Ulster first-round clash with Fermanagh on May 20th.
But Harte, whose panel numbered 45 during the Dr McKenna Cup and league campaigns, is satisfied those who remain are happy with the situation. "They understand only 30 players will be named for the first championship game. Everybody must fight for a place in the 30 before they fight for a place in the 15."
Having been hit with a spate of injuries last summer and this season, Harte believes his decision will ensure he maintains a playing strength of 30 fit players. "I've never yet seen the situation where everyone was available. we've had an awful spate of injuries, which reduced the numbers greatly."
