CRICKET/Fifth Test: Matthew Hayden escaped with a fine of only 20 per cent of his match fee after smashing the window of the door to the Australian dressing-room in anger at his dismissal in the fifth Test yesterday.
Wasim Raja, the match referee, cited Hayden's previously unblemished record in opting for a lenient penalty that seemed to flout assurances from the International Cricket Council that the disciplinary code would be imposed more rigorously.
Hayden was angry after he had seen his opening partner, Justin Langer, suffer a bad lbw decision against Andrew Caddick and then falling himself in the next over to a marginal one for Matthew Hoggard.
Adam Gilchrist was also reprimanded after swearing at England's last man, Steve Harmison.
Umpire Dave Orchard failed to give Harmison caught at the wicket because he was deafened by the England supporters' baiting of the Australian fast bowler Brett Lee.
Also facing a disciplinary hearing is the South Africa pace bowler Mornantau Hayward, who failed to disclose to his country's officials that he has signed for Worcestershire. Hayward agreed a two-year deal in September while still contracted to the United Cricket Board of South Africa. The contract expires at the end of April, although Hayward will move to Worcestershire in March.
