Under-21 Tournament: A 78th-minute goal from Jonathan Hayes earned the Republic of Ireland a point in their opening game yesterday. Hayes took his chance well after Andrew Keogh had found him in space inside the penalty area.

Don Givens's makeshift side conceded a goal 18 minutes earlier when Patricio put the locals in front. Ireland now need to beat Finland this afternoon and Portugal on Friday if they are to retain their title.

UCD goalkeeper Darren Quigley twice kept his side on level terms with fine saves. At the other end the locals comfortably contained Keogh and Stephen Ward. Patricio's goal was one to grace any occasion as he volleyed home from 20 yards. Irish skipper Michael Timlin was sent off on a second yellow card four minutes from the end. Anthony Stokes rattled the crossbar from a free-kick in injury time.
