CAF FINAL ROUND: SIX AFRICAN nations battle it out tonight for three remaining World Cup spots, with the final round of group matches promising its share of drama.
As hosts, South Africa are automatically through. Ghana and Ivory Coast have also progressed after winning their pools with games to spare.
Cameroon, Tunisia and Algeria are favourites to join them, yet all three must overcome one last hurdle. The Indomitable Lions will win Group A if they triumph in Morocco, but anything else and they risk being overhauled by Alain Giresse’s resurgent Gabon, who need a win in Togo.
In Group B, Tunisia’s dramatic draw in Nigeria has maintained their two-point advantage over the Super Eagles. However, should Nigeria beat Kenya, the north Africans will require three points in Mozambique to go through.
The most electric atmosphere will undoubtedly be in Cairo where African champions Egypt scrap for their chance against Group C leaders Algeria. The Pharaohs must win by three goals to overtake the Desert Foxes. Should they win by two, the teams would be inseparable and face a play-off in Sudan on Wednesday.
There is a fierce rivalry between the nations. The controversy has already begun, with several Algerian players injured by stone-throwers upon their arrival in the capital on Thursday.
