Heery picked on Leinster team

EAMONN HEERY has been selected on the Leinster football team to play Connacht in the Railway Cup game in Navan next Sunday.

EAMONN HEERY has been selected on the Leinster football team to play Connacht in the Railway Cup game in Navan next Sunday.

Heery is the only Dublin player included on the Leinster team by manager Mattie Kerrigan as the All Ireland champions are on holiday in the US. He will play in his customary left half back position, alongside Graham Geraghty of Meath and Glen Ryan of Kildare.

This is another amazing twist in Heery's career. He was recently drafted back into the Dublin squad by new manager Mickey Whelan.

Cork and Kerry dominate the Munster line up for Sunday's Railway Cup semi final in Clones against Ulster, who are aiming for a seventh successive title. Paidi O Se and his selectors leave the left wing forward position vacant and will fill it later in the week. The selection isn't dependent on a fitness test for any particular player.

Provincial champions Cork have six players, including full back Mark O'Connor who will have a busy weekend. His club, Bantry Blues, will hold a presentation ceremony on Saturday night in honour of their first county championship victory last autumn.

Kerry are represented by five players with Clare contributing corner back Kieran O'Mahony and corner forward Martin Daly. Tipperary midfielder Derry Foley completes the team.

Limerick football manager Dave Quirke, who saw his side beaten for the first time in four starts by Wicklow last Sunday, has asked the Munster Council to change the system in the McGrath Cup for next season.

Cork and Kerry are taking part in the competition for the first time this year but were seeded by Munster Council, who divided the teams into two groups of three with Kerry and Cork in separate groups. Now Quirke wants an open draw which he believes will be fairer to the so called weaker counties for whom the McGrath Cup was introduced 10 years ago.

"I welcome the participation of Cork and Kerry but don't understand why they should be seeded - it seems to me the system was devised to ensure they would reach the final."

In hurling, Larry O Gorman, who has served a period of suspension, is recalled to the Wexford team for Sunday's Walsh Cup game against Dublin at Wexford Park.

O'Gorman is given his usual left half back position in a side which also sees the return of George O'Connor and Larry Murphy, who missed the concluding league games through injury.

Brian Ivers is given an opportunity in goal with regular goalkeeper Damien Fitzhenry placed at right half forward.
