Stablemates Stephen Hendry and Stephen Lee brought the second round of the World Championships to an early conclusion in Sheffield last night. Both recorded 13-7 victories over James Wattana and Alan McManus to ensure they did not need to return after the mid-session interval.
For Hendry it was a night of mixed fortunes as he clinched a quarter-final against Welshman Matthew Stevens. He was well under way for a maximum break in frame 19 but fouled the pink as he potted the 11th red.
It would have been only the fifth 147 seen at the Crucible Theatre and the second made by the 30-year-old Scot.
However, Hendry is more determined to win the title for a record seventh occasion than add to his maximum break collection. "You want it more every time you come back here," he claimed after winning the last six frames from Wattana.
Wattana scored only 30 points in the last three frames after unluckily losing the 17th to Hendry's excellent 39 clearance.
Lee, runner-up to Hendry in the Irish Masters last month, also made light work of Hendry's fellow Scot, McManus. But he only needed to capture two frames after finishing the penultimate session 11-5 in front.
Victory brought the Grand Prix champion from Trowbridge his first ever world quarter-final appearance and a meeting with defending champion John Higgins.
"I feel I can win this tournament," claimed the world number nine. "John has more to lose."
