Tim Herron held his nerve to beat Tom Lehman on their second play-off hole at the £1.65 million Bay Hill Invitational in Orlando, Florida yesterday.

Both had finished the tournament on 14-under-par 274 after final round scores of 72 and 71 respectively.

After both players parred the first play-off hole, the 18th, Herron sank a 15-foot birdie putt on the 511-yard 16th to clinch victory. Herron (29) was claiming his third PGA Tour title and first since the 1997 Texas Open and earned a cheque for $450,000.

Lehman was competing in only his second 72-hole event since returning from shoulder surgery.

Davis Love 111, who had entered the day on top of the leaderboard alongside Herron, slipped back to third after a closing 73.

Robert Damron added a fiveunder-par 67 to his third round 68 to finish in fourth on 12 under.

The British challenge, which had faltered on day three, went from bad to worse, with both Lee Westwood and Colin Montgomerie firing 79s to close on three over for the tournament.

Ian Woosnam and German Ryder Cup star Bernhard Langer also struggled with rounds of 79 on the last day and were four shots further back.
