John Higgins won the German Open for the second time in three years last night when he beat overseas specialist John Parrott 9-4 in Bingen.

World number two Higgins won five of the last six frames to collect the £50,000 first prize and leave Parrott with a consolation cheque for £26,000.

But the 22-year-old from Wishaw had good fortune on his side, particularly in the last frame of the opening session. He fluked the last two reds and later potted the blue, pink and black to gain a valuable two-frame advantage to take into the final session.

Higgins needed only 65 minutes to turn his 5-3 interval lead into a 9-4 success. He made a break of 80 in the ninth frame after Parrott had missed the pink, then cleared up with a run of 54 to go 7-3 ahead.

The Scot took the 11th frame 80-14 and should have completed victory 9-3 when he again fluked the final red. Instead, Parrott was able to clear up with a 27 to throw himself a lifeline.

But the deficit was too great for the world number six and Higgins' break of 105 gave him the trophy.
