High Irish hopes are Justified in opener

Racing/Charlie Swan On Cheltenham -   2

Racing/Charlie Swan On Cheltenham - 2.00: It doesn't look the strongest Supreme Hurdle I've ever seen, but I think Justified and Publican must have huge chances.

Justified's best run was on soft ground at Punchestown, but it's not his fault he hasn't had the chance to run on better going.

He could easily handle it, and you will find they often handle it the first time they run on it. Publican was very impressive on his last start at Naas, but he doesn't have that much experience. The only thing you could worry about with him is his jumping.

Marcel must have a chance, coming from the Martin Pipe yard, but he has had quite a lot of racing and I would be surprised if he came back.

Only Vintage could be the danger to Justified, who can get the day off to a great start for the Irish.

SELECTION: Justified

2.35: An awful lot of people seem to have an awful lot of time for War Of Attrition, and I agree that he must have a serious chance. I would love to see him win for Mouse. But I can't help being a little worried about his lack of experience and how he might get on around this track.

His first run was at Thurles over two miles and six furlongs, which is a completely different sort of pace from what he is going to get today.

His only other start was at Naas in a race where I ran Old Flame. War Of Attrition jumped well but they didn't go a mad gallop.

I think the Pipe horse Contraband has been set up for this race. I know he can be a little bit dodgy sometimes, but to me he looks the value.

SELECTION: Contraband

3.15: Any of the Irish could win this. I think Rooster Booster can run a huge race, but maybe there won't be enough pace for him. Tactics are going to be a huge factor in this. I can see it being a very tactical race. To my eyes I can see no obvious pace, and it could be the case that no one will want to make it. If that happens, you will have Hardy Eustace out there dictating like he did last year and he will be hard to peg back again if it happens.

I think Brave Inca has a big chance but he will need a fast gallop and might not get it. The same thing could be a problem with Back In Front, who needs a lot of pace as well. Harchibald will sit in, and so will Macs Joy, so it isn't that much of an issue for them. I have a small fancy, though, for Accordion Etoile, who impressed me when he won here at the November meeting.

It's wide open and hard to be confident about anything, but Accordion Etoile looks an each way price and he will do for me.

SELECTION: Accordion Etoile

4.00: This looks very trappy and I don't think it's possible to fancy anything too much. Iris Bleu must have some sort of chance, but maybe an each way option is Tikram, who is crying out for a trip.

SELECTION: Tikram

4.40: I rode in a banks race at Punchestown once, and you do need a special type of horse to go around these special courses. Weight actually doesn't make much difference.

It's experience that counts, and I think Spot Thedifference, even with topweight, will take a lot of beating. Enda Bolger is brilliant at schooling them and he has these types of jumps at home, which is a huge advantage.

SELECTION: Spot Thedifference

5.20: It's the first time this race has been run and for a lot of trainers it has turned into a bit of a nightmare because of the handicapping difference between here and England. A horse like Dabiroun is completely wrong over there compared to Ireland.

Having said that, if the Irish have a chance it could be with Dermot Weld's Ease The Way. I know he only won at Tramore, but he could improve a good bit and Dermot is good at setting them out for races like this.

SELECTION: Ease The Way

2.00 - JUSTIFIED

2.35 - CONTRABAND

3.15 - ACCORDION ETOILE

4.00 - TIKRAM

4.40 - SPOT THEDIFFERENCE

5.20 - EASE THE WAY
