HALF-BACKS Tom Emo and Ciarán Collins combined to send High School past Cistercian Roscrea 10-5 into the quarter-finals of the Leinster Schools’ Section B Vinnie Murray Senior Cup at Carlow IT yesterday.
Templeogue College came out on top 10-0 thanks to a try from flanker Tom O’Reilly and points from the boot of Ciarán Murphy in a war of attrition against St Paul’s College for whom prop Dean Lynch and scrumhalf Karl Kessie battled against the superior organisation of the winners at Ashbourne.
De La Salle Churchtown’s solid start, courtesy of a try from wing Niyi Adeokun and the kicking of fullback Michael Nevin, kept them clear of a fast-closing Mount Temple to win 10-7 at Railway Union.
Newpark Comprehensive could not deal with the loss of five starters to injury against Wesley College, despite making good use of the wind to forge a 10-6 lead at the break, based on a touchdown by outhalf Tim Cahill.
Wesley was catapulted to the front by tries from their centre Richard Jerman and man-of-the-match hooker Andrew McCrann at Ballycorus.
CUS turned on the class to move away from St Columba’s College with second-period tries from prop Joe Redmond and their star man, Michael McGrath, at full-back, for a 22-7 success at Merrion Road.
St Andrew’s College and Presentation College Bray went at it hammer and tongs at Donnybrook in what was always going to be a one-score game. Centre Aaron Browne’s intercept try was important and Andrew Balbirnie’s drop goal decisive in St Andrew’s 8-3 victory.
