Damon Hill's Formula One future was still up in the air last night despite his spirited farewell to his British fans at the weekend. Hill, fifth in his final British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday, is yet to reveal whether he will carry on racing.

The former world champion is scheduled to begin a three-day test session for Jordan at the Monza track in Italy tomorrow. Hill's team are looking for a quick decision so they can give his replacement - probably Germany's Formula 3000 prospect Nick Heidfeld - time in the car before the next race in Austria on Sunday week.

The race at Zeltweg is followed seven days later by the German Grand Prix so it is vital Hill's future is sorted soon. Heidfeld will be at Monza testing for McLaren who are expected to loan him out to Jordan for the remaining eight races should Hill decide to bring his 107-race career to an end.

Hill, who will retire at the end of the season whatever happens in the next week, is expected to continue after his points-scoring display on Sunday which helped Jordan consolidate third place in the constructors' championship.

Hill (38) visited old foe Michael Schumacher at his hospital bed in Northampton yesterday following the German's 130 mph crash at Silverstone. Whether Schumacher's lucky escape has given Hill fresh doubts about carrying on is unclear. But Jackie Stewart, the three-time former world champion, who advised Hill to retire after the British Grand Prix, doubts that is the case. "I don't think it will affect him," said Stewart. "This is something only he can make a decision on. It's a very personal thing."

Team chief Eddie Jordan's parting shot before he jetted off for a holiday at his Spanish villa was for Hill to continue. "After Damon's performance I am not so sure he will want to stop," said Jordan on Sunday. "It is up to him but the team is behind him and would like him to continue if he can drive the way he drove (at Silverstone)."

Jordan added: "I'm quite confident that we haven't seen the end of Damon in Grand Prix racing.

"There's a lot of good races coming up now that he likes and I think yesterday, if he does continue, will have been the perfect kick-start to get it going again."
