Colleges' Football Connacht: St Jarlath's from Tuam were sent packing from the Connacht Colleges senior football title race when they were defeated by St Mary's, 3-12 to 2-7, at Tuam Stadium on Saturday.
Star of the show for the Galway city school was county minor Eddie Hoare, who scored 2-3 before having to go off injured.
St Jarlath's, winners of 12 All-Ireland titles and 44 Connacht titles, were in contention for 40 minutes, but then the class of St Mary's took over in this quarter-final clash.
St Mary's led by 1-8 to 1-6 at the break, with Hoare getting his first goal after 20 minutes, before Barry O'Donovan responded within a minute with an equally excellent goal.
Mary's added a couple of points after the restart before Shane Gaffney levelled the game with a goal after 39 minutes, but that turned out to be St Jarlath's final score. Hoare got his second goal after 45 minutes and Brian Grant sealed victory with a goal in the dying moments.
St Muredach's College, Ballina, also reached the semi-final following their 2-7 to 0-7 victory over St Coleman's of Claremorris at Gilmartin Park, Kiltimagh, yesterday with Ronan Doherty scoring both goals.
St Attracta's, Tubbercurry, beat Rice College of Westport 1-9 to 1-6 to book their semi-final place.
