When Roy Hodgson was appointed to the England job in May of last year, the Sun, it seemed, wasn’t overly enthusiastic about the FA’s choice, not least because it had been assumed (the paper’s columnist) Harry Redknapp would succeed Fabio Capello.
Their front page take on the news – “Woy Gets England Job – Bwing on the Euwos” – earned them a slap from FA chairman David Bernstein (“ are disappointed with the headline in the Sun, which we consider is in poor taste and disrespectful” – and suspicions they were going to treat Hodgson much as they had done, say, Graham Taylor – ie, not tremendously well.
But after Wednesday’s friendly triumph, Hodgson can do no wrong. ‘It’s just like watching BRoyzil,’ they gushed. All’s well, for now. Give it time.
