The Greystones number eight Mark Hogan grabbed all the limelight with a "sudden death" try that put an end to Dublin University's participation at the first round stage of the Old Belvedere Floodlit Cup at Anglesea Road last night.

The Wicklow outfit shouldn't have required sudden death to get through to a second round meeting with Lansdowne. They were 19-0 in front after 24 minutes and a whitewash looked on the cards for an, up till then, inept Dublin University.

The students did give some hint that they were beginning to come to grips with the inclement conditions with tries in the second quarter from Philip Purdue and Paddy Mettler. But sandwiched in between was David Shaw's second try for Greystones, who held a comfortable 24-10 lead at the break.

In fact, they led 34-17 going into the final quarter and it wasn't until the 69th minute that Trinity full back Will Martell got in for his try. The winners still looked safe until replacement wing Gearoid Hayes electrified the sparse crowd with two trys that owed much to his direct running.

If anything, Trinity looked to have the upper hand when winning the toss for sudden death; but they never had a chance to show their hand as Greystones reacted by driving into the heart of the opposition's defence.

In the end, desperate defence wasn't enough to keep out Hogan, who grounded the ball in the left corner within two minutes.
