Alain Van Katwijk of Holland finished in the leading group on the second stage of the Junior Tour into Waterford yesterday to retain his overall lead heading for Kilkenny today but Emmet Hogan of the Ireland team, who was in second place on the same time, suffered an asthmatic attack and came in 13 minutes down, plunging to 50th overall. The riders had to battle through high winds and heavy rain again and after 40 miles from Enniscorthy to Waterford they continued on to complete a lap around Tramore for a total of 58 miles.

At Waterford Hogan was at the head of a breakaway group with van Katwijk, Mark Scanlon (Ireland), Irish champion Dermot Nally (Emerald) and James McMaster (Telecom). But three miles from Tramore, Hogan had to stop because of his asthma problem.

A puncture cost McMaster his place at the front and after Scanlon had led up the hill in Tramore van Katwijk got a puncture and Nally was caught by the next group.

Scanlon pressed on at the front but in the sprint at Waterford, Martin Lonie of Scotland surged ahead to win by a second.
