SIGERSON CUP UCC 1-15 Galway IT 0-5:HOLDERS UCC breezed into the quarter-finals of the Sigerson Cup with an easy win over GMIT at the Mardyke last night.
Fielding 11 survivors from last season’s triumph, UCC dominated throughout, leading by 0-8 to 0-1 at the interval and finishing with a flourish after a brief GMIT rally at the three-quarter stage.
Kevin O’Driscoll and Paul Geaney impressed in the first half as College kicked five points without response to be in control at the break.
GMIT made some impression by kicking three points of their own, two from Eric Monaghan and one from John Ryan to make it 0-11 to 0-5 after 48 minutes, but UCC turned on the style in the closing stages.
Substitute Stephen O’Brien rounded off a stunning move to claim the only goal three minutes from the end and three more points completed a successful opening for the champions.
