MR Peter Sutherland, the former Attorney General, was yesterday awarded an honorary fellowship of the London Business School by the Princess Royal, chancellor of the University of London, in recognition of his contribution to business and trade.

Previous recipients of the fellowship include Mr Percy Barnevik, chairman of Asea Brown Boveri, Sir Colin Marshall, chairman of British Airways, and Sir Richard Greenbury, chairman of Marks and Spencer.

Mr Sutherland, chairman of Goldman Sachs International and the British Petroleum Company, will today receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from the chancellor of Reading University, Lord Carrington.

The degree will be conferred on Mr Sutherland, former European Commissioner, director general of GATT and the World Trade Organisation, in recognition of his contribution to bringing the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations to a successful conclusion.
