Do you follow the horses for courses theory? Or do you go with those in-form? The Alfred Dunhill South African PGA at the Houghton club in Johannesburg provides both options with Nick Price, the defending champion, and two of last weekend's winners, Ernie Els and Greg Norman, dominating the betting.

When Price won over this course 12 months ago, he returned a 19-under par total for the 72 holes and the win constituted his second in two weeks in a part of the world where he is very much at home. As such, odds of 6 to 1 this week look quite tempting.

However, Els is justly installed as the 4 to 1 favourite. In the opening three tournaments on the European Tour, he has finished second, third, first - and such a rich vein of form looks likely to continue on a course the South African knows intimately. Els successively defended the South African Open last Sunday and, apart from Price, his main rival this week is likely to be the Great White Shark, who is 5 to 1. Greg Norman won his own tournament in Australia at the weekend to move within half a point of Tiger Woods in the world rankings and a win in Johannesburg provides the incentive of a possible return to the top placing. David Frost, at 16 to 1, represents a good each-way bet.

4-1 - Ernie Els (South Africa).
