Gerard Houllier has knocked back a tentative approach to return to France as manager of Monaco, insisting he will remain at Liverpool "for the long haul".

The 55-year-old was approached by Jerome de Bontin, a family friend and prospective major investor in the French title challengers, at Anfield following the 2-2 Premiership draw with Arsenal earlier this month. That match was also attended by Prince Albert of Monaco, though Houllier was quick to reaffirm to the pair his long-term commitment to Liverpool despite the club's recent poor form.

"Let's put the record straight, I am not in discussion with, and will not be entering into talks with, Monaco about any role at the club," he said yesterday. "I remain totally committed to Liverpool and the job I'm doing here and I want the fans to know that. I love this club and the supporters and, after all they've done for me, I'm not about to walk out on them. Believe me, I'm here for the long haul.

"It's true that Prince Albert of Monaco attended our game against Arsenal, but that was purely in a social capacity as he is a long-standing friend of both myself and Arsene Wenger. I gave an interview to Le Journal du Dimanche (last Friday) and was asked about recent speculation linking me with Monaco, but my comments have been taken out of context. Politely expressing respect for a club does not mean I will be leaving Liverpool."

Liverpool's chief executive Rick Parry said the club would be sticking by Houllier. "Gerard's record speaks for itself. This has been the first real setback we've suffered, but you have setbacks in any business."
