RACING/Cheltenham Day Three: Beef Or Salmon's Gold Cup fall was overshadowed by Dorans Pride's death in the Foxhunter but it left Michael Hourigan and Timmy Murphy feeling both relief and frustration, writes Brian O'Connor.
"For a split second I thought the worst. He gave a kick when he was down and nine times out of 10 that's a bad sign. But I think he just got caught up in the reins," Hourigan said.
"It's disappointing he didn't get further, but he is a young horse and he'll be back next year. I'm disappointed for Timmy and everyone else but it could have been worse," he added.
Beef Or Salmon was afterwards quoted as an 11 to 2 second favourite with William Hill for next year's Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Champion jockey Tony McCoy broke his collarbone in a fall from Golden Alpha at the third last fence in the Grand Annual Challenge Cup yesterday and was taken to Cheltenham General Hospital where he was released last night.
Tony Dobbin was also taken to hospital with chest injuries after his tumble from Wave Rock at the same fence in the same race. However, he was also released and will be back in time for a busy weekend of action tomorrow.
Norman Williamson expects to be out of action for only a couple of days after being unshipped from Moneytrain in the JCB Triumph Hurdle.
He said: "I've a haematoma on my right hip but it doesn't seem too bad. I was stood on but I'll be back in a day or two."
Connections of Davids Lad will today discover if the horse will run in the Martell Grand National at Aintree next month.
The hearing at the High Court over the 42-day suspension given to the Tony Martin-trained gelding by the Naas stewards, and upheld by the Irish Turf Club, has been adjourned until 11 a.m. today.
