Camogie News: Liz Howard was elected as the new president of Cumann Camógaíochta na nGael for the next three years at the end of the annual Camogie Congress in Tullamore, Co Offaly, on Saturday.
The former Tipperary GAA PRO expressed her delight at being honoured with the position and is looking forward to working hard for the game.
"The strategic plan is our bible," Howard said after her election. "I will be fair to people, I will be inclusive and I look forward to the challenge."
Outgoing president Miriam O'Callaghan addressed the congress, during which she touched on the highlights of her three-year term, in particular events held during the Centenary Year. She also stressed the importance of the work that remains to be done.
Nickey Brennan, incoming GAA president, also spoke to the delegates, saying he hoped to have a camogie representative on the GAC, the National Coaching and Games Development Committee and the Hurling Development Committee and to continue its representation on the Overseas Committee. He also expressed support for the staging of the under-21 hurling final ahead of the All-Ireland senior camogie final on a two-year trial basis, but stated it would require a concerted effort to ensure the day was a success. And he expressed a wish to see more games played in Croke Park, including colleges finals.
Motions passed at the congress included one making the wearing of helmets, with face guards, compulsory for all players under the age of 18.
A number of playing rules were also passed, including one to bring the rule in relation to a player taking the ball into her hand in line with that of the GAA - and likewise the rule concerning the yellow card, which until now was not used in camogie.
