World Cup Digest:Doug Howlett, the All Blacks' winger, has emerged as a serious target for Munster, reports Gerry Thornley.
The 28-year-old, soon bound for the World Cup as part of New Zealand's 30-man squad, has scored 41 tries in his 59 tests, placing him just third on the All Blacks' all-time list of try scorers behind another Munster signing, Christian Cullen (64) and Jeff Wilson (62) and would constitute a major and timely coup for the 2006 Heineken European Cup champions.
With Cullen, John Kelly, Shaun Payne and Anthony Horgan at or nearing the end of their careers and Trevor Halstead departed, Munster coach Declan Kidney has a significant rebuilding job in his outside three and Howlett would be an ideal, experienced acquisition. In latter years Howlett has also played fullback for Auckland Blues.
He also has over 100 appearances in the Super 14, in which he is also the competition's third leading try scorer of all time. He is believed to be in negotiations with a number of European clubs.
Captaincy for O'Driscoll
Brian O'Driscoll will captain the Barbarians against South Africa when the sides meet at Twickenham on December 1st. The Ireland and 2005 Lions skipper is looking forward to the match, in which he will be coached by Ireland coach Eddie O'Sullivan. Paul O'Connell has also been invited.
The Barbarians are lining up the cream of world rugby to play in the match. Those invited include Jerry Collins and Sitiveni Sivivatu from New Zealand, Chris Latham, Matt Giteau and Rocky Elsom from Australia, and Juan Martin Hernandez and Mario Ledesmo from Argentina.
Callam and Corry all-clear
Scotland number eight Dave Callam has been given the go-ahead to travel to the Rugby World Cup. The 24-year-old sustained a facial injury during last Saturday's Test against South Africa at Murrayfield which forced him to retire early from the match.
There was also good news for yesterday for England who believe Martin Corry will be fit and available for their opening World Cup game against the United States in Lens next week. The Leicester forward limped off nursing a knee problem during England's 22-9 tournament warm-up loss to France in Marseille 11 days ago.
