Francis Howley was the most impressive of the Irish in the second round of the European Tour pre-qualifying yesterday when he shot a round of 66. He leads the qualifiers at Five Lakes, Colchester on 136. Other Irish players to do well yesterday were Cameron Clark, who is well placed following a round of 70 for a total of 142 at Woodbury Park. Sean Quinlivan, playing at Wynyard Hall, Hartlepool, is on the same total after shooting a 72 yesterday. Jim Carvill, also at Wynyard Hall, is on 145 after rounds of 71 and 74. In Manchester, Damien Mooney shot a second round of 74 for a 143 total while John Dwyer is on 145 after a disappointing 76 yesterday.

Meanwhile, Justin Rose will return for the final day of play at European PGA pre-qualifier at Chart Hills, Kent after comfortably avoiding the cut.

The teenager, who rocketed to fame with his fourth place finish at the British Open, shot a second round 74 yesterday to move to four-over-par 148.

Rose is still some way from making it to the final 10 who will go to the PGA qualifying school at San Roque and Sotogrande on November 18th. "There are nine guys at 200 or better so realistically I've got to hit something like a 66 tomorrow," he said.
